HOW TO SELECT THE RIGHT BRA FOR YOU

The right bra is all about the one that fits your perfectly well, when it comes to the fit of the bra there are three things that you need to consider:

  • The cup should snug the breast covering the front and the sides of the breast.
  • If the cup is too tight, your breasts will bulge from the top or the sides. Consider increasing your cup size for a perfect fit.
  • If the cup is loose, you will find a gap between the breasts and cup or you will find the bra wrinkling in places. Consider decreasing your cup size for a right fit

  • The bra band should sit perfectly around your ribcage and should form a levelled straight line around the torso.
  • If the band is loose, you will see the band arching. Try wearing a tighter hook if this doesn't work move to a sister size bra i.e. decrease the band size and increase the cup size for example if you are using 36B try 34C.
  • If the band is tight, you will see the band digging and leaving a mark on your skin or the skin bulging out. Try loosening the hook if this doesn't help try increasing the band size and decrease the cup size i.e. if you are 34B try 36A.

  • The right strap is the one that sits on your shoulder perfectly, which doesn't dig in to your skin or falls off the shoulder.
  • If the straps are falling off your shoulders try tightening the straps, if that doesn't work try multiway styling bras.
  • If the straps are digging into your skin, it means the straps are too tight, try loosening the strap if that doesn't work increase your band size.

The bra size is a combination of the band size and the cup size. The band size denotes the underbust size, the band that sits on your torso or rib cage they are indicated as 32,34,36,38 and so on. The cup size is the overbust size or the volume of the breasts, they are indicates as letters A, B, C and so on.

It is important to wear the right size and right fit bra in the long run. Wearing a bra that doesn’t fit well may lead to lot of problems such as back ache, discomfort, bad posture and leaves marks on the skin which leads to irritation.

There are ways to tell if you are wearing the right size, the cups would fit you perfectly without leaving a gap or without causing the breast to spill out from the front or from the sides. The straps would sit nicely on your shoulders without it digging in your skin or falling off shoulders. The band would have a snug fit around your ribcage without it forming an arch or making the skin bulge out from the back.

A sister bra size is the size where the band size changes while the volume of the cup remains the same i.e. if you are 30C then your sister bra size would 28D or 32B.

Choosing sister size bra depends on the band size, If your band is too tight then it is better to increase the band size and decrease the cup size i.e. if 38B is tight then try 40A. If your band is loose then decrease the size of the band and increase the size of the cup i.e. if you are 38B try 36C.

The size of bra can change as your body changes, if you are a teenage girl, your bra sizes increase as you grow up. Weight loss, weight gain or pregnancy can have an impact on your breast tissues which in turn can change your bra size. Most importantly if you feel a little bit discomfort or feel that your back is aching, it is always better to measure and find the right size bra for you.

Ideally a bra should last from 6-12 months depending on the usage, but if you feel that it is not comfortable to wear or if the wires are poking out, it is best to change your bras.
